An In-Home Newborn Session in Casas Adobes | Tucson Newborn Photographer

A one-week-old baby. A two-year-old big brother. A house full of morning light.

And a newborn session that looked a lot more like a normal morning at home than a photo shoot.

This family is part of my Year in the Life photography membership, so I've photographed their family many times before. They already know my favorite instruction:

Just be with your kids. I'll take care of the rest.

And that's pretty much how this morning unfolded.

A newborn session that follows your family's rhythm

Their new baby girl was surprisingly alert for most of our time together, happily taking in everything around her.

Meanwhile, her big brother had other plans.

He danced around his room to music. He read stories with Dad. He gave his baby sister a little attention before deciding he'd had enough and handing her right back.

Mom nursed the baby and played a little finger game with her toddler.

Nobody had to stop doing what they were doing so we could “get the photos.”

We simply followed along.

When big brother wanted to dance, we went to his room.

When Mom and Dad wanted some quiet time with their new baby, we found comfortable spots with beautiful light.

And when it was time for some family photographs, a little snack helped sway their two-year-old into the living room.

That's real life with a newborn and a toddler.

And honestly, that's exactly what I want to photograph.

Why I photograph newborns at home

I only photograph newborns in their homes.

Not because your home needs to be beautiful or perfectly decorated. It doesn't.

You don't need a Pinterest-worthy nursery.

You don't even need a nursery.

You don't need props, elaborate outfits, or a house with huge rooms and perfect light.

I've photographed families in all kinds of homes, and beautiful photographs can be made almost anywhere.

What matters to me is that your home is your home.

It's where your baby is going to have their first bath, where your toddler is going to dance in their bedroom, where you'll feed your baby in the middle of the night, and where you'll spend these first blurry weeks learning your new rhythm as a family.

Those things become part of your family's story.

I want to photograph them.

Your newborn doesn't need to cooperate

One of my favorite things about newborn photography is that babies are completely unpredictable.

They don't care about our shot list.

They don't know that we planned to photograph them sleeping.

They may need to eat. They may need to be held. They may be wide awake and staring at everyone.

That's why I don't build my newborn sessions around making your baby behave a certain way.

We work around your baby.

Newborn sessions are best photographed within the first couple of weeks after birth, but flexibility is much more important than trying to force a particular day or time.

Babies are unpredictable.

Your photographer should be, too — at least when it comes to being flexible.

You don't have to prepare your house for me

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions I hear from parents considering an in-home newborn session.

You don't need to clean your entire house.

You don't need to finish decorating the nursery.

You don't need to hide every toy your toddler owns.

You don't need to make your home look like someone else's home.

I'll look for the spaces with the best light and the places where your family naturally gathers.

In this session, some of my favorite photographs came from little details:

A toddler holding his sippy cup.

Tiny feet and toes overlapping with Dad's as they played and read together.

Mom and Dad near the big windows.

A toddler dancing in his room.

A baby girl quietly taking in her new world.

None of those things needed to be manufactured.

They were already happening.

I just had to notice them.

A pause button in the middle of newborn life

The first few weeks with a new baby can feel like a blur.

You're feeding someone constantly. You're figuring out sleep. You're recovering. You're answering texts from people asking how everyone is doing.

It can be easy to feel like you need to “get through” those first weeks.

I think your newborn session should be the opposite.

It should be a pause.

A chance to slow down for a couple of hours and notice this little person who just joined your family.

To sit on the couch with your baby.

To watch your toddler become a big brother or sister.

To remember what your house looked like.

What your baby's tiny hands looked like.

How your older child interacted with them.

And how it felt to be a family of three, four, or five in those very first days.

That's what I want your photographs to give you.

Not just beautiful pictures of your newborn.

A record of what it actually felt like to become this version of your family.

Looking for an in-home newborn photographer in Tucson?

I photograph relaxed, connected newborn sessions throughout Tucson, including Casas Adobes and surrounding areas.

You don't need a perfect home, a perfectly sleepy baby, or a perfectly behaved toddler.

You just need to show up as yourselves.

I'll bring the camera, find the light, follow your family's rhythm, and look for all the little things you'll want to remember.
