What to Wear & How to Prepare for Your Photography Session | Tucson Family, Newborn & Maternity Photographer

Preparing for Your Session

A thoughtful guide to making something honest and beautiful together.

First things first: this is not about performing.

It’s not about perfectly behaved kids, spotless homes, or knowing what to do with your hands.

It’s about creating images that feel like you.

Every session with me is collaborative. I will guide you — gently and intentionally — but your interactions, your rhythms, and your instincts matter most. If something feels awkward or off, we pivot. If something feels natural and good, we lean in.

This is art we’re making together.

Here’s how to prepare.

1. Dress for Your Environment (and Your Energy)

Clothing should feel like it belongs in your space.

If your home is filled with earth tones — warm woods, creams, muted greens — lean into that palette. Let your clothing complement your surroundings rather than compete with them.

If your family is bold, expressive, colorful — wear that.
If you’re calm and slow and quiet — soft tones may feel more honest.

There’s no single “right” palette. There is only what feels true.

A Few Styling Guidelines

  • Choose textures: linen, cotton, gauze, knits, denim, soft sweaters.

  • Add layers: cardigans, jackets, overalls, scarves.

  • Incorporate color and patterns thoughtfully.

  • Let one or two people wear a pattern, not everyone.

  • Bold colors are welcome — if they feel like you.

  • Avoid overly busy graphics or neon tones that overpower skin tones.

The goal is cohesion, not matching.

2. Plan Real Moments

Your session shouldn’t feel like a list of poses.

Instead, think about what you actually do together.

Plan 2–4 simple activities that feel natural for your family. This gives us movement, connection, and storytelling.

“This isn’t about performing. It’s about creating photographs that feel like you.”

For Newborn Sessions

Quiet, slow, connected moments work beautifully.

  • Feeding the baby

  • Rocking in the nursery

  • Coffee on the porch while holding baby

  • Bath time

  • Swaddling and singing

  • Laying together on the bed in morning light

The magic is in the in-between.

Newborn sessions are slow and intentional.

We follow your baby’s rhythm — feeding, rocking, changing, resting — and document the quiet in-between moments that already feel fleeting.

For Families with Older Kids

Energy is welcome here.

  • Popsicles on a blanket

  • Board games at the kitchen table

  • Hopscotch on the sidewalk

  • Playing catch in the yard

  • Baking cookies

  • Sprinklers at golden hour

Let them be kids. We don’t need perfect. We need real.

Family sessions are built around movement & connection.

Yard games, popsicles on the porch, baking in the kitchen, basketball at the park. The goal isn’t perfect behavior. It’s real interaction.

For Maternity Sessions

Think about transition. Anticipation. Stillness.

  • Folding baby clothes together

  • Quiet time in the nursery

  • Walking at sunset

  • Sitting on the bed talking about baby

  • Slow dancing in the living room

Soft textures photograph beautifully here — linen dresses, knits, open cardigans.

Maternity sessions are an invitation to pause.

To stand still in beautiful light. To honor the strength and softness of this season before it becomes memory.

For Senior Portraits

This session is about identity.

  • Bring clothing that reflects different sides of you.

  • Include something personal: a camera, sports gear, books, headphones.

  • Choose locations that matter — downtown, desert, home, studio.

  • Plan for both relaxed portraits and movement.

Think less “pose” and more “presence.”

This isn’t about stiff poses or forced smiles.

It’s about presence — how you stand, how you laugh, how you carry yourself at this exact chapter of your life.

For Headshots

These are about clarity and connection.

  • Choose solid tones or subtle textures.

  • Keep patterns minimal.

  • Bring 2–3 options.

  • Think about where the image will live — website, LinkedIn, speaking engagements.

And most importantly: we’ll work until it feels like you.

Context adds depth.

We can step beyond the traditional backdrop and photograph you in your element — your workspace, natural window light, or outdoors at golden hour.

3. Pay Attention to Light

Light is everything.

Walk through your home and notice:

  • Which rooms get soft window light?

  • When does that light fall into the spaces you love?

  • Is your home brightest in the morning or evening?

Morning and late afternoon typically give us the most beautiful light.

We’ll choose a time that aligns with both your rhythm and your home’s natural light patterns.

4. Be Open to Collaboration

I will guide you.
I will gently suggest adjustments.
I may ask you to try something new.

Your willingness to lean in and trust the process often creates the most artistically compelling images.

But you always have the final say.

If something feels unnatural, we change it. If something feels too posed, we shift. If your child needs a break, we pause.

This is not about perfection.
It’s about honesty.

5. Think of This as an Art Project

Not just a session.

The more intentional you are about:

  • Clothing

  • Light

  • Activities

  • Mood

The more layered and meaningful your gallery will feel.

You don’t need to orchestrate every moment — just come prepared with ideas and openness.

I’ll take care of the rest.
