A 70th Birthday, 51 Years of Marriage, and One Legendary Mud Fight

When this client reached out, she had one clear vision: celebrate her mom’s 70th birthday by honoring the relationships she shares with her seven grandkids. Seven. And yes, it was every bit as lively and meaningful as you’re imagining.

Her words:

“We were celebrating my mom's 70th birthday and the special relationships she has with the 7 grand kids + cousin fun.”

There’s something really grounding about photographing a family at this stage. Seventy years of life. Fifty-one years of marriage. Generations stacked in one backyard. It’s not just a photo session — it’s legacy work.

Grammy & Her Seven

Instead of stiff group poses, we built the session around connection. Each grandchild had time with their grandma doing something they genuinely love. Reading together. Painting and drawing. Sitting close and talking while painting Grammy’s nails. The kind of moments that feel ordinary now but won’t always be.

And the best part? My client barely had to lift a finger.

She told me afterward:

“That was one of the easiest shoots I have been a part of, nevermind, that I wasn't in it! LOL.”

And also:

“It felt very hands off for me, you took charge in a very positive way :)”

Honestly, that’s exactly what I want for my families. You show up. You love on your people. I’ll handle the rest.

Fifty-One Years

We also carved out time for her parents alone. They’ve been married for 51 years and have never had professional photos taken together.

Never.

That alone felt monumental.

There is something deeply powerful about photographing a couple who has built a whole life together. The comfort. The quiet humor. The way they stand close without even thinking about it. No performance, just presence.

Later, she wrote this in her review:

“Though they had never had a professional photoshoot, Jenna was able to walk them through the shoot with grace and a lot of comfort. The photos of my parents are magnificent…”

Magnificent is not a word I take lightly. But I felt it too when I saw them on the back of my camera.

And Then… The Mud Fight

Just when we thought we were wrapping up, the cousins did what cousins do best. They created chaos.

An entirely unplanned, fully committed, backyard mud fight broke out.

There was shrieking. There was jumping. There were clumps of dirt flying through the air. My camera and I absolutely took a hit. I won’t pretend I didn’t drive home with dried mud in places I’m still discovering.

Worth it? One hundred percent.

My client said it perfectly:

“The impromptu mud fight was fun to watch (not fun to clean up the kids after though! LOL worth it 100%).”

Those are the photos kids will point to someday and say, “Remember when…”

And those are the images grandparents treasure most. Not just the smiling-at-the-camera ones, but the real, unfiltered, slightly messy joy.

Funny. Real. Close-Knit.

When I asked her to describe her family in three words, she said:

“Funny, real, close-knit.”

That sums up the entire afternoon.

A family who doesn’t take themselves too seriously.
Who shows up for each other.
Who celebrates milestones in ways that actually feel like them.

Sessions like this are why I love being a Tucson family photographer. We get to preserve the big milestones — 70th birthdays, 51st anniversaries — but also the in-between moments that tell the fuller story.
